Research: The Hippie style- Continuation of post Fashion in the 1960s




- probably began in the 1964 when many people began to copy the Beatles mop tops
- anti-long hair campagin in 1970
- could destroy Singapore because of hippism was a  new version of opium for the people
- long hair was essential element in hippism
- signs warning long-haired men sprang in public places
- long-haired travellers were turned away if they didn't agree to have a haircut
- Chambers of Commerce, the Singapore Manufactures' Association and other groups supported the campaign and civil servants who chose to ignore the warnings to trim their hair were sacked
- In late 1971, MOE issued 8 institutes with sketches of 4 styles- 2 acceptable and 2 not
- Unaccepetable length meant hair reaching the eyes in front or an ordinary shirt collar behind

- In 1972 the govt stepped up campaign against unkempt hair
- On 24 June 1972, they made the poster (above) in Chinese, Malay and Eng
- 1973, Men with long hair were not allowed to enter any fire station
- Barbers and Hairdressers  1973, were encouraged to engage their customers in conversations and draw their attention to the relation between long hair and drug-taking

  1. Do you think this was needed? We can still conserve tradition and culture in other ways whattt. why cut hair? like so unfair to the girls :(

    Yes, because without it, this 'hippism' may have bred a new generation of drug-addicts and youngsters who only know how to party all night long, without any discipline or understanding of their responsibilities. Our country, a young one at that, wouldn't have been able to afford such a thing when it was still not fully stabilized.

  3. @Inez: The type of clothing they used to wear made their appearance look very roguish and indifferent; something that made them look rowdy. Also, those who used to take drugs were often those who adopted the hippie style.
