Recreation in 1962
- 7 community and holiday centres opened around the island
- were built on the farming and orchard lands
- had stage for cultural shows, reading room, health and veterinary services, all sorts of games and recreations, soon they each had a TV set as well
- holiday camp by the sea at kranji
- here people can stay for a while near a stretch of beach specially reserved for them
- prizes won for sailing, swimming
- boat trips along the bay
- water sports games
- yacht racing main event
- most fun game: tub race
- for laughs: greasy poles
Learning points:
In the past, they also had community centres just like we have now. However, in today's time we rely heavily on technology and therefore, our recreation most of the time is bounded by the confines of our homes. In the past, these recreational activities allowed people form different races to bond and share conversations. However, today we are all consumed by the overpowering need to use technology for our enjoyment so much so that we forget to converse and spend time with our family and friends. This builds segregation not only within our own families, but within the community as well as we no longer have so frequent opportunities to bond with others through events such as the water sports that used to take place in the past.
