Research: Fashion in the 1960s

1.  revolutionary decade in the history of fashion in the United Kingdom and United states, where Hippie styles were entering into the fashion mainstream Hippie styles were considered to be one of “rampant individualism,”
2. singapore, took measurable acts on being selective with the popular culture that is going on, especially against hippie styles fashion sense
3. The authorities at that time associated people with long hair with hippies and drug addicts
4. The people equated long hair with individualism. The Government equated it with undesirable Western influence, primarily drug consumption
5. major events that is occurring in the world, did not completely influences us, as the government from 1965s onwards hold a control over the type of popular cultural influences that came to Singapore
6. ministry of culture focusessed on building Singapore own culture to deter the coming undesirable culture
7. fashion that was carried by the colonial, leave some remnant in Singapore, however, certain drastic fashion sense was prevented from coming into Singapore
8. youth fashion in the 1960s became increasingly westernized with brightly colored clothes with floral or psytchedilic prints, unisex fashion and constantly changing hemlines

some of the clothes that were worn by the youth during 1960s-1970s

1.  increasing leisure activity was open to the public
2.  fashion choices associated with sporting pursuits were readily accepted
3. sportswear like shorts , culottes and swimsuit were by view as indecent before 1960s. However, it soon became accepted by the public.
4. sports which gradually became a popular culture, became a medium which influenced the fashion trend, introducing new styles into the fashion industry

Learning Points:

The Singapore government in the past as well as present is trying very hard to retain our heritage. For now, they are trying to preserve old buildings to preserve while in the past they used to ban things such as fashion styles. The government in the past and presen are both trying to achieve a common goal and that is to preserve old customs and traditions even with the changes in countries surrounding our nation.
