Interview: Inez's mom; Food in the 1960s

Food that was sold in the 1960s are generally what we eat now, however through changes in recipes and time, the taste of food varied.

In hawker centers last time, people sold dishes that they created with their own recipe. Later on, the recipes were passed down from generation to generation. That's how we get most of our food in the hawker centers.

Some people earned a living by selling food on carts they push. These people would usually come at a specific time to the central of a residencial area. Some of these people for example the 'old indian nut seller' sold many different kinds of nuts. Some people sold 'Dim Sum' for example crystal shrimp dumplings and steamed buns/'pau' with different kinds of fillings inside.

As Singapore has been developing rapidly, these people who sold those snacks have also stopped their business. Therefore, we don't really get to see them anymore.

  1. In the past, did people from a particular race try out food made by other races?

  2. Probably, according to my mum, she was invited to her Malay friends' house for a special festivial. She did try Malay food which she recalled was really delicious. So yes, i suppose that people did try out other races food when they were given opportunitites.
