Many built by the various missions still survive in some form like the Singapore Art Museum. There were single storey schools, which were liked by both teachers and students. It was liked by teachers as there would not be the need to trudge up and down the stairs with the heavy pile of books before and after each class, and students as well, as it allowed a quick dash to the expansive playing field that were usually found by the clusters of classrooms, or to the tuck shop.
One such school was Anthony Road Girls’ School which had airy widely spaced classrooms housed in rows of single storey buildings spaced relatively widely apart, providing the classrooms with very generous ventilation.
Anthony Road Girls' School

- Classes were conducted every other Saturday at one point of time in Singapore.
- Visits to school were usually accompanied by smell of exercise books.

(although the link is written 1950s, the information taken down from the website is mainly mentioned as from the 1960s)
My summary:
The schools in the past were not as well developed as they are now as they don't have many facilities such as badminton courts. They were architecturally of simple built. However, students still used to receive good education and they used to learn for the fun of learning.
In the present times, the education has just become something very stressful and something that is only to acquire good grades and admissions to top notch universities internationally and nationally. It is now merely for competition and syllabuses are so compact and confusing that student study merely for obtaining marks in examinations and not for increasing their knowledge.
Therefore, the identity of Singapore in the past was a easy paced lifestyle in terms of education as compared to today's more hectic one.
